Course Overview

This CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) course is designed to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to work safely and effectively as a Slinger/Signaller on construction sites. The program includes a combination of theoretical knowledge, practical training, and testing, ensuring candidates meet industry standards.

    • Individuals with little to no experience who wish to gain the CPCS Red Card for Slinger/Signaller.

    • Experienced workers looking to formalize their skills and obtain certification.

    • Understanding the Role of a Slinger/Signaller

      • Responsibilities on-site

      • Communication with crane operators and other team members

    • Health & Safety Regulations

      • Key legislation: LOLER, PUWER, and the Health & Safety at Work Act

      • Site safety awareness and risk assessments

      • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements

    • Lifting Equipment and Accessories

      • Types of lifting equipment: slings, shackles, chains, and more

      • Inspection, maintenance, and storage

    • Weight Assessment & Load Stability

      • Determining weights and center of gravity

      • Ensuring load balance and stability

    • Site Setup and Equipment Inspection

      • Pre-use checks for lifting accessories

      • Planning and preparing for lifting operations

    • Communication and Signalling Techniques

      • Hand signals and radio communication

      • Effective coordination with crane operators

    • Practical Slinging Tasks

      • Safely attaching and detaching loads

      • Directing loads with precision

    • Emergency Procedures

      • Identifying potential hazards and responding effectively

    • Theory Test:

      • Assessment of theoretical knowledge, including health and safety, regulations, and operational procedures.

    • Practical Test:

      • Demonstrating safe and efficient slinging and signalling techniques:

        • Inspecting lifting equipment

        • Attaching and detaching loads safely

        • Communicating with crane operators using signals

        • Executing lifting operations as per CPCS guidelines

    • Participants must be at least 18 years old.

    • Basic English skills to understand the training and complete tests.

    • A valid CITB Health, Safety, and Environment (HS&E) Test passed within the last 2 years is required.

  • Participants who successfully pass the theory and practical tests will receive the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card for Slinger/Signaller (A40), allowing them to work as trained operators.
