Course Overview

This CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) course is designed to provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to operate hoists safely and efficiently on construction sites. The course includes theoretical learning, practical training, and testing to ensure candidates meet CPCS standards.

    • Individuals with little to no experience who wish to gain the CPCS Red Card for Hoist Operator (A20).

    • Experienced operators seeking formal certification.

    • Understanding the Role of a Hoist Operator

      • Responsibilities on-site

      • Coordinating with site teams and other operators

    • Health & Safety Regulations

      • Key legislation: PUWER, LOLER, and Health & Safety at Work Act

      • Risk assessments and hazard awareness

      • Safe working practices and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

    • Types of Hoists and Their Components

      • Overview of passenger and goods hoists

      • Hoist parts, functions, and pre-use inspections

    • Load Assessment and Safety

      • Calculating load weights and ensuring balance

      • Identifying potential hazards and emergency procedures

    • Hoist Operations

      • Pre-operational checks and safety inspections

      • Operating the hoist for passenger and goods transport

      • Safely loading and unloading materials

      • Emergency stop procedures and troubleshooting

    • Safe Site Practices

      • Working around pedestrians and other machinery

      • Communicating with team members effectively

    • Emergency Situations

      • Responding to equipment malfunctions and incidents

    • Theory Test:

      • An assessment of health and safety knowledge, operational procedures, and equipment understanding.

    • Practical Test:

      • Demonstration of safe and efficient hoist operation, including:

        • Conducting pre-use checks

        • Operating the hoist with passengers and goods

        • Handling emergency scenarios effectively

        • Adhering to safety protocols during operations

    • Participants must be at least 18 years old.

    • Basic English skills to understand the training and complete tests.

    • A valid CITB Health, Safety, and Environment (HS&E) Test passed within the last 2 years is required.

  • Participants who pass the theory and practical tests will be awarded the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card for Hoist Operator (A20), qualifying them to work as a trained operator on construction sites.
