Course Overview

This CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to effectively supervise lifting operations. It focuses on planning, communication, and compliance with safety standards to ensure safe and efficient crane operations.

    • Individuals with little to no experience who wish to gain the CPCS Red Card for Traffic Marshaller (A73).

    • Experienced workers looking to formalize their skills and obtain certification.

    • Roles and Responsibilities of a Crane Supervisor

      • Legal duties under LOLER, PUWER, and the Health & Safety at Work Act

      • Understanding the role within a lifting team

    • Health & Safety Regulations

      • Importance of site safety and risk assessments

      • Safe systems of work and method statements

      • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements

    • Lifting Operations and Equipment

      • Types of cranes, lifting equipment, and accessories

      • Pre-use checks and maintenance of lifting equipment

    • Planning Lifting Operations

      • Creating and implementing lift plans

      • Calculating load weights and center of gravity

    • Supervising Lifting Operations

      • Setting up the lift site and supervising safety protocols

      • Communicating effectively with the lifting team

    • Signalling and Communication Techniques

      • Use of hand signals and radios to direct lifting operations

      • Managing crane operator and team interaction

    • Emergency Procedures

      • Identifying and responding to potential hazards during lifts

      • Implementing emergency stop protocols

    • Theory Test:

      • Assessment of health and safety knowledge, legal requirements, and lifting operation planning.

    • Practical Test:

      • Demonstration of effective crane supervision skills, including:

        • Preparing and implementing lift plans

        • Supervising crane and lifting operations safely

        • Communicating effectively with the team

        • Managing emergency scenarios

    • Successful participants will receive the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card for Crane Supervisor (A62), enabling them to supervise lifting operations on construction sites.

  • Successful candidates will receive the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card for Traffic Marshaller (A73), certifying their competence to work as a trained marshaller on construction sites.
