Course Overview

This CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to operate a 360-degree excavator safely and effectively. Covering both theoretical and practical aspects, this course ensures candidates are prepared to meet industry standards.

    • Individuals with little to no experience who wish to gain the CPCS Red Card for 360 Excavator (A59).

    • Experienced operators who want formal certification to operate tracked or wheeled excavators.

    • Understanding the Role of a 360 Excavator Operator

      • Responsibilities on-site

      • Communication with site teams and other operators

    • Health & Safety Regulations

      • Key legislation: PUWER, LOLER, and Health & Safety at Work Act

      • Site safety awareness and risk assessments

      • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements

    • Excavator Features and Functions

      • Overview of tracked and wheeled excavators

      • Components, controls, and their functions

    • Planning Excavation Work

      • Assessing site conditions

      • Understanding load weights and stability

    • Operating the Excavator Safely

      • Pre-operational checks and maintenance

      • Starting and stopping procedures

      • Excavating, grading, and backfilling techniques

      • Maneuvering the excavator in various site conditions

    • Attachment Handling

      • Using buckets, breakers, and other attachments

      • Safely changing and securing attachments

    • Working on Inclines and Confined Spaces

      • Managing stability on slopes and uneven terrain

      • Operating effectively in restricted areas

    • Emergency Procedures

      • Identifying potential hazards

      • Responding to equipment malfunctions and emergencies

    • Theory Test:

      • Assessment of health and safety knowledge, operational procedures, and machine-specific understanding.

    • Practical Test:

      • Demonstration of 360 excavator operation skills, including:

        • Conducting pre-use checks

        • Excavating and grading tasks

        • Safely maneuvering the excavator on-site

        • Managing emergency scenarios

    • Participants must be at least 18 years old.

    • Basic English skills to understand the training and complete tests.

    • A valid CITB Health, Safety, and Environment (HS&E) Test passed within the last 2 years is required.

  • Participants who successfully complete the course will receive the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card for 360 Excavator (A59), certifying their competence to operate tracked or wheeled excavators safely.
